We are starting a new topic today: how to work with fractions and decimals in the same expression or equation. The core skill in this topic is being able to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa. Our lesson today focuses on converting decimals to fractions, up to the thousandth place.
In a spacewalk, astronauts complete “Get Ahead Tasks” – small tasks in unfilled time to get ahead. Today we briefly explored exponents as a Get Ahead topic. Exponents connect to multiplication and square roots and will be more frequently used in sixth grade math.
In whole-group lesson, we looked at various ways of drawing fractions. Here’s an example of visually drawing fractions with unlike denominators and then adding them together visually to see how the denominators become equivalent. Remember to always draw when encountering a new concept!
After the weekend, we reviewed how to add and subtract fractions and began to learn adding and subtracting mixed numbers, where we have a fraction and a whole number.
