Exponents (Get Ahead Topic)

In a spacewalk, astronauts complete “Get Ahead Tasks” – small tasks in unfilled time to get ahead. Today we briefly explored exponents as a Get Ahead topic. Exponents connect to multiplication and square roots and will be more frequently used in sixth grade math.

Drawing fractions

In whole-group lesson, we looked at various ways of drawing fractions. Here’s an example of visually drawing fractions with unlike denominators and then adding them together visually to see how the denominators become equivalent. Remember to always draw when encountering a new concept!

Adding and subtracting mixed numbers

After the weekend, we reviewed how to add and subtract fractions and began to learn adding and subtracting mixed numbers, where we have a fraction and a whole number.

Adding and subtracting fractions

We reviewed adding fractions with equal denominators and looked at a method of finding common denominators for unlike fractions.

Converting fractions between proper and improper forms

Part of today’s lesson looked at how to convert between proper and improper fractions. We reviewed this skill and connected it to adding and subtracting fractions.

Simplifying fractions is an important skill to master. Today’s lesson explored what simplification means and looked at ways to master the skill.

Today we begin Unit 3 (Adding and Subtracting Fractions). To start, we reviewed vocabulary and types of fractions.

In class today we focused on using estimation while subtracting decimals. We also reviewed the steps to subtract decimals.

Using estimation when adding decimals

Our lesson today focuses on using the skill of estimation when adding decimals. We also looked at various ways to draw different representations of decimals.

Estimating – a math superpower

Estimating is a valuable skill which can be applied frequently in everyday life and can also help simplify problems and check solutions. Estimating uses the skill of rounding to different place values depending on the accuracy of estimation desired.
